Hawaii Slow Running

Man, the side of a Volcano on a Polynesian island is not the best place to pick up running again after a long hiatus.

I run with a Garmin GPS watch that monitors my heart rate. I find it great for making sure I'm not slacking. It's usually pretty accurate too, generally matches when I take my pulse manually and studies have found the heart rate trackers pretty reliable.

Went pretty slow today for two miles at about a 13 minute mile pace. Yes, that pace sucks, but at least I know I was working at it. Average heart rate of 179 bpm for the run when my age adjusted max would be around 188 bpm.

And I feel it too, those two miles in 84 degree weather with a fair amount of hills are brutal for a chubby man like me.

About 650 days till Comrades 2019. Feels impossible to go from here, struggling to complete 2 miles, to 56 miles.

Odds are I'll probably give up. Two years is a long commitment to something this painful. But it's not just comrades at stoke but my health and life. Probably should focus. Keep at it. Stay to course. So on and so forth...
